I must admit, I haven't used my G3 much other than recording a few landscape timelapses. Since the audio has a problem with connecting to an external mic i can't use it for vlogging much. Today i updated the firmware. How well does everyone's G3 with 90 degree FOV do with recording things close up?
I tried to record some lettering on an envelope and it was really blurry. Only things at a distance several feet away are in focus. I have messed with the metering setting and get the same result. If i record my hand it is out of focus. I wondered if this was something with my camera or the latest updates.
I am recording in 1080 @ 60/fps. I don't want to record higher because of the larger files size to transfer via wifi.

The action camera is not designed for close shooting, can you take a normal picture outside for us to check?

what you can do is with the G3 duo slave camera, is very easily unscrew the lens slightly, which will turn it in to a macro camera, then you can get very close up video. but you void warranty etc, and will need to crew back in for normal use. That way you dont unfocus the main camera lens

Thanks for the idea. I don't own the slave camera. I upgraded and purchased because of the touch screen feature as it's quicker and easier to get to different settings compared to my Git1 & Git2. Except, my older cameras seem to do much better recording objects up close.

You will need to pop the front off and adjust the lens. Easier on a Git2 than the Git3 (I have a Git3 pre-prepared - fell off a motorbike at about 100mph. Camera survived just lost SD card and front cover). Image below was taken with a Git2 mounted 50mm from a mobile phone showing the chequerboard photo. You can use Opencv to easily take out the lens distortion image https://medium.com/@kennethjiang/calibrate-fisheye-lens-using-opencv-333b05afa0b0 applies whether used for Macro or not.
For what it is worth for the camera in default 640x480 mode coefficients I used.
DIM=(640, 480)
K=np.array([[343.24124856555983, 0.0, 308.222991052765], [0.0, 343.4694803721243, 243.0952632153879], [0.0, 0.0, 1.0]])
D=np.array([[0.005220995226795195], [-0.040661813028102005], [-0.275387568661619], [0.4306080014065684]])

Distorted and corrected images of phone (Asus Zenphone Go TV) screen shots are attached.
